SDG Summit and the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development

New York, USA

September 24-26, 2019

1. On the occasion of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the SDG Summit and the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development respectively took place in New York from the 24th to the 25th of September and on the 26th of September in 2019, respectively. These gatherings were meaningful because the stocktaking of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) implementation and financing was carried out at the Head of State and Government level for the first time since the adoption of the SDGs and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda in 2015.

2. The political declaration entitled “Gearing up for a decade of action and delivery for sustainable development,” calling for further enhanced efforts by the international community toward the SDGs, was adopted at the SDG Summit. At the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development, participants from the government, the private sector, and civil society announced various initiatives and commitments that will contribute to SDG financing.

3. The delegations of the Republic of Korea were headed by Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs H.E. Mr. Jeong-sik Kang for the SDG Summit and Director-General for Development Cooperation Ms. Hyunjoo Oh for the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development. Participating in a side event on SDG 16+, Mr. Kang reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of the Republic of Korea to build just and equal societies at home and abroad.

4. The plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly took place on October 15, 2019 in New York to endorse the political declaration of the SDG Summit and to provide a platform for the Member States who could not take the floor at the SDG Summit to deliver their national statements. H.E. Mr. Tae-yul Cho, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, emphasized the importance of inclusivity and equality in promoting sustainable development as well as global multi-stakeholder partnerships.
