UN Human Rights Council Adopts Resolution on Situation of Human Rights in DPRK

1. A resolution on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was adopted by consensus at the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council on June 22.

 

2. The government of the Republic of Korea participated in the consensus process of this year’s resolution in line with its basic position that it works with the international community toward substantial improvements in the human rights situation of the people of the DPRK.

 

3. The content of this year’s resolution is largely similar to those of the previous resolutions on the situation of human rights in the DPRK. New elements included in this year’s resolution are concern over the possible deterioration of human rights and humanitarian situation in the DPRK caused by the threat of COVID-19 and an emphasis on the importance of timely assistance to the DPRK in case of COVID-19 outbreak in the country, as well as a call for the DPRK to work with the international community to prevent the outbreak of COVID-19.
