1. On June 28, Ambassador Oh Joon of the Republic of Korea to the UN was appointed to the High Level Panel on the Future of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) by DAC Chair Erik Solheim. The High Level Panel will discuss ways to reform the DAC.

° The DAC is a group of advanced countries that provide development assistance, which the ROK joined in January 2010.

2. The Panel was launched with a view to re-identifying the role of the DAC and setting its future vision in the changing international environment of development cooperation, as can be seen from the adoption in September 2015 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; and the growing role of such new donor countries as Brazil and China.

3. The Panel, composed of 17 members in their individual capacity, will embark on its mission in September 2016 and submit in the first half of the year 2017 a report on ways to reform the DAC.

4. Ambassador Oh Joon’s appointment to the High Level Panel is seen as a result of the ROK’s standing at the DAC enhanced through the Ambassador’s service as President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and leadership in the negotiations in the lead-up to the ROK’s accession to the DAC; and the ROK’s robust activities as an Asian donor country after its accession to the OECD DAC.

° By serving on the Panel, the Ambassador is expected to lay the groundwork for the ROK’s active participation in international discussions on the DAC reform.
