Foreign Minister Chung to Participate in ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong will participate in the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings (Chair: Brunei Darussalam) which will be held from August 3 to 6 in a virtual format.

 

o These annual Meetings are participated by the ten member countries and dialogue partners of ASEAN including the U.S., China and Japan. Foreign Minister Chung will take part in the ROK-ASEAN, ASEAN Plus Three (the ROK, China and Japan), East Asia Summit, and ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers’ Meetings.

 

o The Meetings will be held in a virtual format due to COVID-19.

ASEAN-Related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings

- August 3 (Tu.) 10:30-11:30 ROK-ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

          17:00-19:00 ASEAN Plus Three Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

- August 4 (Wed.) 20:00-22:30 East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

- August 6 (Fri.) 20:00-24:00 ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

 

2. By participating in the Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, the ROK government aims to maintain the momentum for ROK-ASEAN cooperation that is expanding based on the New Southern Policy. The ROK will explain its plans to contribute further and strengthen cooperation for an early recovery from COVID-19 and its economic aftermath, which is a common regional challenge. The ROK will also emphasize the importance of regional peace and stability.

 

3. Foreign Minister Chung will explain the ROK government’s efforts to achieve a substantial step forward toward the complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. The ROK will ask for participating countries’ support for its efforts.

 

4. At the ROK-ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to be held on the morning of August 3, the two sides will review the achievements in respective sectors since the launch of the New Southern Policy and explore ways to cooperate toward a better future based on the past achievements.

 

5. The ASEAN Plus Three Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be held on the evening of August 3, participated by the ten ASEAN countries, the ROK, China and Japan. This meeting will focus on ways for joint response to COVID-19 and for economic recovery.

 

6. The East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be held on August 4, bringing together major regional countries including the U.S., China, Japan and Russia. The Meeting will cover a wide range of issues, including regional and global affairs and other pressing issues such as COVID-19 and climate change.

 

7. The ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be held on the evening of August 6, participated by 27 countries including the ASEAN member states, the U.S., China, Japan, the DPRK and the EU. At the meeting, participating countries will comprehensively discuss regional affairs including those regarding the Korean Peninsula, and security issues.
