Luncheon Remarks

Ladies and gentlemen,

“Healing” is a popular keyword showing our zeitgeist, the spirit of our age. After all, we all need some respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Fortunately enough for us, the two days in Suncheon and the southern coast have been such a wonderfully refreshing experience. I now feel thoroughly reinvigorated. I truly appreciate the gracious hospitality of Governor Lee and Mayor Cho. Thanks to them, our group has firsthand experience of true healing. In particular, Governor Lee has prepared today’s feast for us with the best of local produce - nourishing us with the taste of the terroir from this “land full of vitality.” My special thanks go to him.

Members of the diplomatic corps,

This visit has been truly an experience to savor. It has given us vivid evidence on the key to sustainable development - the harmonious balance between humanity and nature. We have seen the marshlands and the Suncheon Bay Park connected by Dongcheon (동천) - a magnificent product of human effort, where nature has been crafted to embrace man-made landscapes.

I know for sure I wasn’t the only one moved by its sheer beauty and by its healing power - three million visited the Park in its first two hundred days.

So, this visit has been a genuinely eye-opening experience. Later today we will return to Seoul - but many of us will leave part of our hearts here, and instead take a bit the region’s natural beauty and the humane spirit of her people. And I hope we will keep this, even as we live our hectic diplomatic lives.

I understand that one of Governor Lee’s favorite phrases is “근청원견(近聽遠見)” - listen to what is close at hand, and set your sights afar. In a sense, this is the essence of what we have been doing during the past two days. Speaking. Listening. Communicating. And so, coming to share a vision - of a reunified Korean peninsula, a stable Northeast Asia and a happier world for all.

So, I would like say once again “Thank you” to Governor Lee, Member of National Assembly Lee and Mayor Jo for being such generous hosts. And to all my diplomat friends here - it’s been a joy being with you. I hope to see all of you again on the 16th of December, at the End of Year Concert.

다또 하지 하룬 이스마일 대사님,
내외귀빈 여러분,

점점 여유가 사라지고 있는 현대인의 삶에서 ‘힐링’이 최근 가장 큰 화두가 되고 있습니다. 지난 1박2일간 저를 포함한 외교부 간부들과 주한외교단은 순천을 포함한 이 곳 남해안에서 스스로를 돌아보는 귀중한 시간을 가질 수 있었습니다. 개인적으로도 11박 12일간의 긴 해외출장 기간 중 쌓였던 피로가 단숨에 풀리는 듯합니다. 금번 행사 참가자들이 진정한 힐링을 경험할 수 있도록 환대를 해 주신 이낙연 지사님, 조충훈 시장님께 감사 드립니다. 특히, 오늘 바쁘신 중에도 ‘생명의 땅 전남’의 이름에 걸맞게 이 땅의 힘이 그대로 전해지는 귀한 재료로 성대한 오찬을 준비해 주신 이낙연 지사님께 각별한 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.

주한 외교단 여러분,

우리는 금번 행사를 통해 지속 가능한 성장의 답은 인간과 환경의 조화에 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있었습니다. 갈대습지와  순천만 정원이 동천을 따라 하나로 연결되면서, 그 자체로 하나의 자연이 되고 그 자체로 하나의 인간의 역사가 되는 것을 보았습니다. 순천만 정원 개장 채 200일이 되지도 않아 3백만명 이상이 다녀갔다는 사실에서도 인간과 자연의 조화가 주는 힐링이 우리 현대인들에게 얼마나 큰 감동을 주는지 잘 알 수 있습니다.

자연과 순천시민이 우리에게 준 고마운 가르침을 주한 외교단 여러분과 제가 가슴에 잘 간직하고, 치열한 외교활동 속에서도, 자연의 향기가 나고 사람의 내음이 은은한 그런 활동을 함께 펼쳐가기를 기대합니다.

아울러, 이낙연 지사님께서 평소 강조하신 “근청원견(近聽原見)” 즉, ‘가까이 듣고 멀리 내다본다.’는 가르침처럼, 여러분과 외교부가 보다 긴밀히 소통함으로써, 한반도의 통일과 동북아의 안정, 그리고 지구촌 모두의 행복을 위한 미래 비전을 공유해 나가기를 바랍니다. 

다시 한 번, 오늘 오찬을 주최해 주신 이낙연 지사님, 그리고 오늘 행사를 위해 많은 도움을 주신 이정현 의원님, 조충훈 시장님, 그리고 이번 여행에 적극 참여해주신 외교단 여러분께 진심 어린 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 12.16 송년음악회에서 다시 뵙기를 기대합니다. 감사합니다.  끝.
