The Presentation of the Bodhi Tree

Distinguished guests,

Today is a very meaningful and special day in the history of Korea-India relationship.

We are gathered here to witness the presentation of the sacred and precious Bodhi Tree, a gift from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh given to President Park Geun-hye on the occasion of President Park’s state visit to India this past January. It is a gift that symbolizes the historical tie between Korea and India, a token of the very special friendship shared by our two countries.

Let me thank Minister Shin Won-sop of Korea Forest Service and Director Lee Yu Mi and her team at this beautiful Korea National Arboretum for organizing today’s ceremony.

On behalf of the people and the government of the Republic of Korea, let me also extend my sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Singh for so kindly sending Secretary Anil to Korea, and Secretary Anil for making the long journey all the way from India to grace this occasion today.
Distinguished guests,

The Bodhi tree sapling, which the Indian government is presenting to us, is a direct descendant from the very sacred tree under which Buddha achieved enlightenment.

This sacred gift is a symbol of the special bond shared between our two countries, which can be traced back to a long history that served as the basis for mutual respect and trust that continues to enrich us today.

The commitment to achieve true happiness through freeing oneself from suffering blossomed into the belief in the universal love for mankind that the Korean people will seek to achieve happiness for not only themselves but for others as well.

It cultivated a strong sense of patriotism and a remarkable cultural heritage.

The enduring strength of our friendship has been proven time and again. From Tagore’s famous poem, “a Light of the East” that gave so many Koreans a ray of hope during the dark days of the Japanese occupation, to the founding of the Korean government and through the Korean War, the people of India offered us invaluable help when we needed it most.

The Korean government is also very grateful for the generous hospitality shown by the Indian government during President Park Geun-hye’s visit to New Delhi January, this year.

Today, in accordance with the Joint Statement as well as the will of our leaders and peoples, we are mustering our wisdom to open a new chapter in our relationship through the comprehensive dialogue that includes economic as well as political cooperation.

Distinguished guests,

There is a famous ancient text in Korea that reads, "A tree with deep roots, as it is not easily swayed by the wind, abundantly blossoms and bears fruit.”

The relationship between our two great nations is very much like this deeply rooted tree. It has endured the test of time and grown into a remarkable partnership today.

With the love and the care from the Korean people, this Bodhi tree – which will begin to take root here in Korea starting today – will undoubtedly grow into a magnificent creature providing refreshing shade and abundant fruit someday. It will provide a generous and peaceful resting place for all those in need.

Similarly, I sincerely hope that Korea-India relations will develop into a fruitful partnership that will provide a source of peace and prosperity for both of our peoples.

오늘 이 자리는 한국과 인도 관계에 있어 매우 뜻깊은 날입니다. 지난 1월 마모한 싱 총리께서 인도를 국빈 방문하신 박근혜 대통령님에게 한-인도간 역사적 우호관계와 각별한 우의의 상징으로 선물하신 보리수나무 묘목 증정식을 갖기 때문입니다.

이렇게 뜻 깊은 자리를 마련해 주신 신원섭 산림청장님과 이유미 국립수목원장님, 그리고 국립수목원 관계자 여러분들에게 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 아울러, 오늘 이 증정식 행사 참석을 위해 먼 길을 여행하신 와드와 외교 차관님과, 한국과의 관계를 매우 소중히 여겨 차관님을 한국에 특별히 파견해 주신 싱 총리님께도 한국 정부와 국민들을 대신하여 감사의 말씀을 전하고자 합니다.

내외 귀빈 여러분,

오늘 증정식을 갖는 이 보리수나무 묘목은 그 아래서 석가모니 부처님께서 깨달음을 얻은 신성한 나무의 직계 후손입니다. 이 보리수나무로 상징되는 양국간 교류는 유구한 역사를 자랑하며, 서로의 삶과 문화를 풍요롭게 하는 밑거름이자 신뢰의 기반이 되었습니다. 모든 사람들이 고통에서 벗어나 진정한 행복을 누려야 한다는 믿음은 우리 자신뿐 아니라 남에게도 행복을 주는 보편적 인류애의 중요성을 깨닫게 하였습니다. 나라 사랑 정신과 찬란한 문화유산을 남겼습니다.

한국과 인도와의 변하지 않는 우정은 일제 식민통치 암흑시대에 한국민들에게 큰 희망을 준 타고르의 시 “동방의 등불”에서, 그리고 한국 정부 수립 과정과 6.25 전쟁 발발시 지원에서 거듭 확인되었습니다. 특히 한국 정부는 박근혜 대통령님의 지난 1월 인도 국빈 방문시 인도측이 베풀어 주신 환대를 감사히 기억하고 있습니다. 이제 양국 정부는 수교 40주년 공동성명으로 확인된 양국 국민과 지도자들의 의지에 따라, 경제통상 및 정치안보 협력을 포함한 광범위한 협력을 통해 양국간 전략적 파트너쉽을 강화하고, 양국 관계의 새로운 장을 열기 위해 서로의 지혜와 힘을 모으고 있습니다.

내외 귀빈 여러분,

“뿌리 깊은 나무는 바람에 흔들리지 않으므로 꽃이 좋고 열매가 많이 열린다”는 옛 말씀처럼, 한-인도 양국 관계는 마치 뿌리 깊은 나무와 같다고 확신합니다. 무수한 세월을 견뎌내고, 괄목할만한 동반자 관계를 구축해 온 양국 관계가 이를 증명합니다.

오늘부터 한국 땅에 뿌리를 내리기 시작하는 이 보리수 묘목은 한국민들의 사랑과 보살핌 속에 거목으로 자라, 깊고 넓은 그늘을 만들고 많은 열매를 맺을 것이며, 모든 사람들에게 풍요로움과 평화로운 쉼터를 제공할 것입니다. 한-인도 관계가 이 보리수나무처럼, 풍성한 파트너쉽으로 발전해 나갈 것이라고 믿습니다. 감사합니다. 끝.
