MOFA-Diplomatic Corps Charity Concert

Ambassador Valdez,

Excellencies,

Members of the Diplomatic Corps,

Friends and families of Foreign Ministry,

Good evening! Welcome to the Foreign Ministry’s 2013 Charity Concert.

Even though we are nearing the holiday season, this year, we are not allowed to just relax and enjoy, given the worrisome development in Pyongyang.

For this reason, I am very grateful for all the participants for their time and efforts despite their busy schedules that made this concert possible.

Henry Longfellow, one of the greatest American poet of the 19th century, defined music as “the universal language of the humanity.”

In this regard, I think it is quite timely that we have gathered together this evening to get away from our stress and deepen our skinships through music.

This concert is also very meaningful that the proceeds will go to help those in need around us.

Personally, I am very much looking forward to the performances by my good friends, Ambassador Fujita of Brazil, Ambassador Chua of Singapore, and Ambassador Rata of New Zeland.

At the same time, I am also looking forward to seeing the Korean performers – composed of officers of my ministry – outperforming my diplomat friends. Am I right?

Even though this concert has not been staged for some years, starting with tonight’s performance I hope it will become a proud tradition of the diplomatic corps in Korea.

I also hope that it will come to be known in diplomatic communities worldwide as one of many privileges of being posted in Seoul.

Being the first year of the Park Geun-hye Government, we have had a series of high-profile summits and strategic dialogues with most of you this year. Through it all, Korea strengthened its relationship with partners and broadened its diplomatic horizon.

Needless to say, it’s been a life of never ending “Sleepless in Seoul” for me, the Foreign Ministry, and the diplomatic corps in Korea. I thank you for all of your contributions.

I hope you will enjoy tonight’s program. Let me conclude with wishing you happy holidays and all the best in the coming new year – the year of the horse!

주한외교단 여러분,

그리고 친애하는 외교부 직원과 가족 여러분,

 반갑습니다. 2013년 「주한외교단과 함께하는 송년 자선음악회」에 오신 것을 환영합니다.

 연말연시가 다가옴에도 불구하고, 최근 평양으로부터 들려오는 우려스러운 소식을 감안할 때, 올해 연말은 예년처럼 편하고 즐겁지만은 않을 것 같습니다. 이러한 상황에서, 바쁘심에도 오늘 공연을 준비해 주신 여러 대사님들을 비롯한 주한외교단과 외교부 동료, 그리고 가족 여러분께 감사하다는 말씀 드립니다.

  19세기 미국 최고의 시인 중 하나로 평가받는 핸리 롱펠로우는 “음악은 인류 공통의 언어”라고 정의했습니다. 오늘밤 주한외교단과 우리 외교부 식구가 음악을 통해 일상의 스트레스를 잊고 서로에 대한 이해를 더 깊이 하고자 이 자리에 모인 것은 매우 의미있는 일이라고 생각합니다. 아울러, 오늘 이 음악회를 통해 불우이웃을 도울 수 있다는 것도 매우 뜻 깊은 일이라고 생각합니다.

 
 오늘 본인은 개인적으로 좋은 친구들이기도 한 후지타 대사님(브라질), 추안 대사님(싱가포르), 라타 대사님(뉴질랜드) 세분의 대사님들께서 선보일 연주에 큰 기대를 하고 있습니다. 이와 더불어 저희 외교부 직원들의 음악적 재능 또한 어디에 내놓아도 부끄럽지 않는 수준이라고 자부 합니다.

 본인은 이와 같은 음악회가 비록 최근 수년간 개최되지 못하고 있었지만, 오늘을 계기로 앞으로는 서울외교단의 자랑스러운 전통으로 자리 잡고, 나아가 한국 근무의 특권으로 전 세계 외교가에 널리 알려지기를 희망합니다. 

 올해 한해는 박근혜 정부가 출범한 첫해로서 일련의 정상외교와 전략적 소통을 통해 전세계 많은 국가들과의 관계를 더욱 돈독히 하고 한국의 외교지평을 넓힌 한 해였습니다. 그 과정에서 본인은 마치 끝나지 않는 “서울에서의 잠 못 이루는 밤”을 보내왔으며, 저희 외교부나 주한 외교단 여러분들도 마찬가지였을 것이라고 생각합니다. 여러분 모두의 노고에 깊은 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.

 오늘 다채로운 프로그램의 자선 음악회를 통해 즐거운 시간을 보내시기 바랍니다. 그리고 이 자리를 빌어 2014년 청말띠의 해에 복 많이 받으시길 기원 드립니다. 감사합니다. /끝/
