The Republic of Yemen is an Arab country which is the second biggest country in the Arabian Peninsula spanning 555,000 square meters. It is known that Yemen has an estimated population over 30 million. Yemen’s natural and cultural attractions include four UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Old Walled city of Shibam, the Old City of Sana’a, the historic town of Zabid, and biodiversity-rich Socotra Archipelago.
The Republic of Korea and the Republic of Yemen established diplomatic relations in 1985. Since then, the two countries have maintained friendly relations in political, economic, cultural areas and in the multilateral field as well. In the wake of Yemen’s current conflict, the Republic of Korea, as a member of the Friends of Yemen, has provided humanitarian assistance to Yemen amounting to almost 20 million US dollars every year. In addition, from 2023, the Korean government resumed bilateral development cooperation projects with the Yemeni Government and expanded training programs for Yemeni government officials.
Yemen is the first country in which Korean companies successfully conducted overseas crude oil exploration and production projects at the Marib oil field in 1984. Since then, the two countries have developed close partnership in the fields of energy and natural resources production and infrastructure development in Yemen. Korea and Yemen have also maintained bilateral trade even during the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
The Korean government supports the UN-led peace effort in Yemen. I believe Yemen’s peace and stability is of key importance to regional and global stability. When stability returns to Yemen, it is my firm belief that the existing friendly relations between our two countries will be further strengthened. I offer my warmest regards and sincere wishes to the people of Yemen.
