Director-General for International Organizations Holds Virtual Consultation with his UK Counterpart

1. As part of efforts to strengthen cooperation with like-minded countries on the international stage, Director-General for International Organizations Chung Byung-ha had a virtual consultation with Mr. James Kariuki, Multilateral Policy Director at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on October 22.

 

2. During the consultation, the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest, including ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the international arena such as cooperation in COVID-19 response at the United Nations, and cooperation in elections at the World Trade Organization, the United Nations Security Council, and other international organizations, as well as preparations for the 4th UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in 2021.

 

3. In particular, the ROK side shared the government’s efforts to host the 4th UN Peacekeeping Ministerial next year (Apr. 8-9, Seoul), and asked for active cooperation from the UK, a co-chair of the Ministerial next year and host of the 1st Ministerial in London, in the process of preparing for the event.

 

o The UK side said that it would work closely together with the ROK side to ensure the success of the next Ministerial based on its experience of hosting the 1st Ministerial.

 

4. The two sides agreed to continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation on key global issues and peacekeeping by holding consultations on a regular basis.
