Press Releases : Second Vice Foreign Minister to Attend an OECD Ministerial Council Meeting

 1. Second Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul will attend the annual Ministerial Council Meeting of the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD), which will take place in Paris, France, on May 6 and 7 under the theme of “Resilient Economies and Inclusive Societies: Empowering People for Job and Growth.”

° The OECD meeting will cover ways to improve the economic resilience in terms of economy, society and environment; step up cooperation between the OECD and its key non-member states; implement the OECD’s development strategies; and strengthen the multilateral trade regime.

2. Vice Minister Cho will deliver leading remarks in the session on development. In the remarks, he will propose using the global monitoring system of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (also known as the Busan Global Partnership) as an instrument for attaining the post-2015 international development goals. In addition, he will highlight the need to conduct projects aimed at poverty eradication and sustainable development with official development assistance (ODA) and various other resources, such as from trade, foreign direct investment and tax revenue.

3. Vice Minister Cho will hail the formal launch of the OECD’s South Asia Regional Program, which will take place during the meeting. On the occasion, he will express the willingness of the Republic of Korea to play an active, bridging role for the program to contribute to a sustained economic growth in Southeast Asia and to strengthened relations between the region and the OECD.

4. In the session on environment, the Vice Minister will underscore the need for the OECD member states to play leading roles in addressing climate change as well as the need for the OECD to help move forward with negotiations on climate change by providing a number of analyses on ways to raise funds for the Global Climate Fund. He will also speak about the outcome of the green growth policy pursued by the ROK government and its future plan.

5. On the sidelines of the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting, Vice Minister Cho will meet with Catherine Novelli, US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and Environment, to comprehensively discuss the ROK-US economic ties. He will also hold a meeting with Deputy Executive Director of UN Women Lakshimi Puri to explore ways for the ROK government to contribute to international efforts to reinforce women’s capabilities.
