1. The 3rd Korea-Japan Economic Committee Meeting will be held on June 12, 2001. This Meeting is being
held according to the 'Joint Declaration on the New Korea-Japan Partnership in the 21st Century', which was
agreed upon in October 1998. The first and the second Meetings were held in March 1999 and April 2000,
respectively. The Korean side will be led by Mr. Choi Hyuck, Deputy Minister for Trade at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Japanese side will be led by Mr. Yoshiji Nogami, Deputy Minister for
Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Director-General-level officials from relevant Ministries of
both sides will participate.
2. Both sides will exchange views on the current macro-economic situation and policy. They will also have
comprehensive discussions on bilateral trade issues and ways to cooperate together in international
organizations, such as the WTO, OECD, APEC, ASEM and ASEAN+3. The Korean side will note that Japan’s
trade restrictive measures have been steadily increasing, including the initiation of anti-dumping
investigations and safeguard procedures and stricter examination procedures on fresh vegetables. For the
stable increase in bilateral trade, the Korean side will require that the Japanese side carefully manage such
measures. Furthermore, the Korean side will call for Japan’s efforts to eliminate non-tariff barriers and to
increase investment between the two countries. On June 11, 2001, a working-level meeting for Deputy
Director-General-level officials will be held to examine bilateral trade and investment issues and ways to
resolve them.
