1. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Korea and
Canada, Trade Minister Hwang Doo-yun, is scheduled to visit Canada from October 29 to November 4.
Trade Minister Hwang will head the joint government-civilian trade and investment delegation with the aim of
strengthening traditionally friendly cooperative ties and promoting trade and investment between the two
countries.
2. The delegation is composed of 20 people from various organizations including the Federation of
Korean Industries, the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and representatives from private sectors.
The delegation is scheduled to attend consultation meetings on export and investment, along with other
meetings, with high-level officials of Canada in Toronto and Vancouver in order to explore ways to promote
trade and investment between industries of the two countries.
3. Furthermore, during the visit to Canada, Trade Minister Hwang will be holding bilateral talks with Pierre
Pettigrew, the Canadian Minister for Trade. The two Ministers will discuss ways to cooperate at multilateral
levels on various bilateral trade issues including, among others, a telecommunications agreement between
Korea and Canada and imports of Canadian beef in the wake of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also
known as mad cow disease.
4. Furthermore, during the visit, Trade Minister Hwang will attend a Korea-Canada trade seminar hosted
in liaison with the Korea-Canada Private Business Council where he will deliver a keynote address to
Canadian business leaders on the topic of general economic policy including Korea's current economic
situation and vision to become a business hub of Northeast Asia. Mr. Hwang will also request for further
efforts to strengthen substantial cooperative relations between the two countries by increasing investment
of Canadian companies in Korea, among others.
