1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(KCCI) will jointly dispatch an Economic Mission to Eastern Europe during September 23rd - October 3rd, to
tour countries in the Eastern European region such as Poland, Romania and Bulgaria, that are newly
emerging as niche markets and gateways into the EU market which has expanded to encompass 25
countries on May 25th.
2. Mr. Kim Jae-sup, former Deputy Minister and current Ambassador at MOFAT, will be leading the
Economic Mission which will consist of 19 members including Mr. Kim Hyo-sung, KCCI President, as well
as business representatives. The Economic Mission will consult with businesspersons in Warsaw,
Bucharest and Sofia on exports and investment in order to deliberate on measures to enhance bilateral
trade and investment, and hold talks with representatives of local branches of Korean corporations to listen
to the difficulties experienced by these businesses and seek solutions.
3. Especially, as the Economic Mission is planning to re-engage in exchanges of economic personnel,
which had grown stagnant in the aftermath of the 1997 financial crisis, with Romania and Bulgaria (both
scheduled to accede to the EU in 2007) through holding the 4th Joint Meeting of the Korea-Romania
Economic Cooperation Committee and the 5th Joint Meeting of the Korea-Bulgaria Economic Cooperation
Committee, it is expected that the Mission's visit will serve as an opportunity to call the attention of Korean
businesses to these countries.
4. In addition, Ambassador Kim Jae-sup, the head of the Economic Mission, will consult with the
President of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, the Deputy Minister of the Romanian
Ministry of Economy and Trade, and the Deputy Minister of the Bulgarian Ministry of Economy to discuss
government-level measures for enhancing bilateral trade and investment, and meet with local
businesspersons to discuss issues of interest, such as ways to support the advancement of Korean
businesses into the Eastern European market.
