1. On June 12, 2002, Minister for Trade Hwang Doo-yun met with Deputy US Trade Representative Jon M.
Huntsman, to discuss bilateral trade issues between Korea and the US, such as those concerning
automobiles, steel, IPR, pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications, and ways to strengthen bilateral
cooperation. Mr. Huntsman's visit to Korea is from June 10 to 12, 2002.
2. Deputy USTR Huntsman praised the Korean Government's efforts to improve protection of IPR and
requested that Korea participate in efforts to reduce the automobile trade imbalance between the two
countries, manage medical insurance standards in a more transparent manner, and allow industries to
adopt international mobile internet standards themselves.
3. Minister Hwang explained Korea's efforts to make improvements in the areas suggested by the US and to
smoothly resolve bilateral trade issues through close consultations. Minister Hwang questioned the
necessity of the US safeguard measures on steel. He expressed concern regarding the growing spread of
US protectionism, with particular reference to the 2002 US agricultural laws. Both sides agreed to cooperate
closely in the WTO Doha Development Agenda negotiation process.
