Outcomes of the 5th Round of Negotiations with China concerning the Imposition of Customs Duties on Rice

1.      The Korean delegation headed by Mr. Lee Jae-gil, Ambassador for DDA negotiations at the Ministry of 
Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT), and consisting of officials from related government agencies such as 
MOFAT, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Finance and Economy, held the 5th round 
of negotiations with China concerning the imposition of customs duties on rice on September 23rd, in 
Beijing.

- The Chinese delegation was headed by Mr. Zhang Xiangchen, Deputy Director-General at the Department 
of WTO Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce, and consisted of officials from the Ministry of Commerce, the 
China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Import & Export Corporation, and the Chinese Embassy in 
Korea.

2.      The two sides held detailed and concentrated discussions on the issues raised in the 4th round such 
as the period of postponement, the level of TRQ expansion, rice import management mechanisms, and 
other bilateral issues.

3.      As time is running short, both sides agreed to endeavor to make rapid progress in the negotiations, 
and agreed to hold the next round within the month of October.
