Outcome of the 5th Round of Negotiations with the U.S. concerning the Imposition

1.      The Korean delegation headed by Mr. Lee Jae-gil, Ambassador for DDA negotiations at the Ministry of 
Foreign Affairs and Trade, and consisting of officials from related government agencies such as MOFAT, the 
Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Finance and Economy, held the 5th round of 
negotiations with the U.S. in San Francisco concerning the deferment of the imposition of customs duties on 
rice.

-          The U.S. delegation was headed by Mr. James Murphy, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for 
Agricultural Affairs, and consisted of related officials such as Mr. James Grueff, Assistant Deputy 
Administrator for International Trade Policy Foreign Agricultural Service, and other officials from the 
Department of Agriculture and the Department of State.

 

2.      The two sides concentrated discussions on the major issues raised in the past rounds, such as the 
increase in TRQ level, and acquisition of a stable market and consumer sales, but was unable to reach a 
consensus.

 

3.      Both sides agreed to continue to hold negotiations on the major issues.
