1. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Yu Myung-hwan met with experts on the issues of the Korean
Peninsula and international affairs and other influentials in the U.S. public opinion in New York on March 28
including President Emeritus of Council of Foreign Relations Leslie Gelb, President of the National
Committee on American Foreign Policy George Schwab, Chairman of the Board of the Korea Society Donald
Gregg and former Executive Director of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization Charles
Kartman.
2. At the meeting, Minister Yu explained about the basis of Korea’s new government’s North Korean policy as
well as its foreign policy. An extensive and constructive exchange of views took place on the prospect for the
development of the Korea-U.S. alliance, the U.S. policy and overall political landscape.
3. In particular, Minister Yu put emphasis on how the Korea-U.S. FTA and Korea’s participation in the U.S.
Visa Waiver Program can contribute to establishing an institutional framework for the development of the
bilateral relationship. He also asked the above mentioned luminaries who have long been interested in
developing the Korea-U.S. relations for their continued interest and support.
4. In addition, Minister Yu listened to various constructive opinions of the luminaries regarding the prospect
for the development of the Korea-U.S. alliance in the 21st century. He said the Ministry will look for ways for
the opinions of these experts to continue to be taken into consideration in future discussions between the
two countries.
