Minister Yu Visits Japan (Courtesy Call on Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda)

1. Minister Yu Myung-hwan paid a courtesy call on Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on April 4 and 
exchanged views on developing Korea-Japan relationship, strengthening bilateral economic cooperation in a 
substantial way, promoting people-to-people exchanges and resolving the North Korean nuclear issue.    

2. Prime Minister Fukuda noted that last February’s bilateral Summit meeting with President Lee Myung-bak 
served as a milestone for the beginning of new era in the Korea-Japan relations. He also stated that he is 
looking forward to President Lee’s upcoming visit to Japan in mid-April.  

3. The two sides agreed to develop a more matured partnership based on mutual confidence and shared 
interest by maintaining the momentum for the development of the Korea-Japan relationship. They also 
agreed to make concerted efforts to promote regional cooperation in Northeast Asia.   

4. The two sides agreed to work closely for President Lee’s successful visit to Japan slated for April 20 to 21. 
Minister Yu requested Japan to expand investment in the parts and materials industries of Korea and to 
promote technical cooperation between the two countries. In response, Prime Minister Fukuda said he will 
have relevant ministries take Minister Yu’s suggestion into account. 

5. Minister Yu expressed expectations for active discussions among Japanese politicians on granting local 
political rights to Korean residents in Japan, and hoped for the Japanese government’s support in this 
regard.     

6. In addition, the two sides agreed to closely cooperate to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue through 
the Six-party Talks. Also, Minister Yu explained Lee Myung-bak administration’s North Korean policy to Prime 
Minister Fukuda.
