1. Minister Yu Myung-hwan met with the Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) Angel Gurria and the Chairperson of the OECD Development
Assistance Committee (DAC) Eckhard Deutcher at the sidelines of the G8 Development Ministers’
Meeting in Tokyo on April 5. They discussed matters of mutual interest such as Korea’s bid to join the
OECD DAC in 2010.
2. Secretary-General Gurria acknowledged that Korea is fully qualified to be a member of the OECD
DAC, and welcomed Korea’s efforts to join the Committee.
3. Minister Yu pointed out the low number of full-time staff with Korean nationality in the OECD
Secretariat compared with Korea’s financial contribution to the Organization. In response, Secretary-
General Gurria stated that the OECD was taking better balance among the member states into due
consideration, and mentioned that he would exert efforts for more Koreans to enter the Secretariat.
4. Both sides agreed to extend collaborative efforts in dealing with major issues of the OECD
including the Ministerial Meeting of the OECD Council slated for this June in Paris, issues of climate
change, promotion to increase the official development assistance and the accession of new members
to the OECD.
