1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has decided to move the Center for Energy and Resources
Cooperation between Korea and South America, which had been administered by the Korean Embassy in
Argentine for the recent two years (from 2006 to 2007), to the Ministry’s headquarters and expand it to the
‘Center for Energy and Resources Cooperation between Korea and Latin America’.
2. The Center is to support Korean companies effectively in entering the energy and resources markets in
Latin America. To this end, the Ministry will promote ‘energy and resource diplomacy’ under the close
cooperation of Korean overseas missions in the region. The Center will collect information on resources in
this region, share the data with the Korean corporations and support researches of the relevant institutions
on major resources.
3. In particular, the Center has recently set up ‘resources hotline’ section on its website (energy.mofat.go.kr)
in order to answer the questions and requests for consultations of interested Korean companies
expeditiously, thus providing them with concrete solutions for their difficulties in the resources industry of
Latin America.
4. Under the Latin American and Caribbean Affairs Bureau of the Ministry, the Center is equipped with
experts in the resources sector and headed by the Deputy Director-General of the Bureau. The Ministry is
taking the establishment of the overseas branches of the Center in Korean Embassies to the region into due
consideration.
5. The Center is expected to support the Korean companies’ activities in the resources industry of Latin
American countries more effectively through the close network among the Korean overseas missions,
relevant organizations including government bodies and Korean enterprises.
