Outcome of the Korea-Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

1. Minister Yu Myung-hwan met with Japanese Foreign Minister Koumura Masahiko on April 4 and 
exchanged views on matters of mutual interest such as the development of Korea-Japan relations, the 
North Korean nuclear issue and bilateral cooperation on global issues. 

2. The two sides welcomed the friendly and cooperative atmosphere which has been growing since the 
launch of the new administration of Korea. They shared the view that Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda’s 
presence at the Korean presidential inauguration in February and President Lee’s upcoming visit to 
Japan from April 20 to 21, which marks the resumption of “shuttle diplomacy” between the two 
countries, have helped create momentum important in enhancing bilateral relations.

3. Minister Yu hoped for the development of a mature partnership with Japan on the basis of facing up 
of the history and his Japanese counterpart, Minister Masahiko Koumura agreed with him in this regard.
 
4. In addition, the two sides agreed to work closely for the preparation of President Lee Myung-bak’s
 visit to Japan slated for April 20-21, so that the state visit can contribute to enhancing mutual 
confidence and the substantial economic cooperation between the two countries. 

5. The two sides agreed to continue to exert converted efforts for peaceful resolution of the North 
Korean nuclear issue and closely work together for smooth process of the Six-party Talks to this end. 
Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura requested cooperation from the Korean government in resolving 
the issues of Japanese abductees to North Korea and Minister Yu showed willingness to provide 
cooperation to the extent possible.   

6. In addition, the two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on global issues on energy and 
environment. Also, the two sides agreed to cooperate in assisting developing countries in their 
development efforts and to co-host the Dialogue on Expanding Partnership for Development, which 
is to take place in Bangkok on April 23 as part of the efforts.
