Holding of the 2010 Meeting of APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade

1. The 2010 Meeting of APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) will be held in Sapporo, Japan, 
on June 5-6.

2. Participating at the meeting will be trade ministers from 21 APEC countries, including Korean 
Minister for Trade Kim Jong-hoon, Chinese Minister for Commerce Chen Deming, Australian Trade 
Minister Simon Crean, Japanese Foreign Minister Okada and Trade Minister Naoshima and WTO 
Director-General Pascal Lamy. The agenda to be discussed at the meeting will include, 
△ supporting the multilateral trade system, including the WTO DDA negotiations, △ one year 
re-extension of the standstill on protectionism, △ assessment of the achievement of the APEC 
Bogor Goals in 2010, and △ pathways to the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP).

 * The Japanese foreign minister and trade minister will be participating as co-chairs
   of the meeting (APEC custom)

3. At this meeting, the trade ministers will discuss the one year re-extension of the standstill on 
protectionism by 2011 that was agreed upon at the G20 Washington Summit and the APEC Summit 
in Lima in 2008, as well as the APEC Summit in Singapore in 2009. The trade ministers will also consult 
on the methods of assessing the achievement of the standstill in cooperation with the WTO.

 ㅇ The Government of the ROK has been playing a leading role in the international community, 
     including within APEC, the G20 and the WTO, in order to gather global support for the standstill 
     and ultimately contribute to the global recovery from the financial crisis.

4. Moreover, the trade ministers will also exchange views on ways to adopt a stand-alone statement 
at the APEC-level to urge the early conclusion of the DDA negotiations.

5. At this meeting, the trade ministers will also focus on the issues of △ assessment of the 
achievement of the Bogor Goals in 2010, △ new growth strategy in preparation for the post-crisis 
era, △ structural reforms and the extension of the mandate for the APEC Secretariat’s Policy 
Support Unit (PSU).

 ㅇ Five developed economies and eight developing economies of APEC, including the ROK, are 
    voluntarily participating in the assessment process, and this is expected to contribute to the 
    acceleration of trade and investment liberalization within the APEC region.

 ** Developing economies (8): ROK, Taiwan, Hong Kong China, Singapore,
     Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Chile

6. On the occasion of the meeting, Minister for Trade Kim Jong-hoon will hold bilateral discussions 
with the trade ministers of Australia, Peru, New Zealand and Singapore, and exchange views on 
matters of mutual interest such as FTAs.
