1. Korea and India will hold inter-governmental talks on July 6, 2010 in
conclude a bilateral nuclear cooperation agreement. Mr. Kim Kyung-soo, Director-General
for International Economic Affairs will be heading the Korean delegation composed of
officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Education, Science and
Technology, and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. Mr. Gitech Sarma, Joint Secretary of
the Department of Atomic Energy will be heading the Indian delegation composed of officials
from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Atomic Energy.
※ The two countries agreed to establish a nuclear cooperation framework during a summit
meeting held in January 2010 and decided to launch negotiations on the nuclear cooperation
agreement during a joint ministerial committee meeting held on June 18, 2010.
2. The nuclear cooperation agreement aims to guarantee the peaceful uses of nuclear
energy and facilitate the transfer of nuclear materials, equipment, etc. for strengthened
nuclear cooperation. The agreement, if put into effect, is expected to facilitate Korea’s
exports of nuclear plants to India in the future.
※ India currently operates 19 nuclear plants (4,183 MW) and plans to increase the capacity
to 20,000MW and 63,000MW by 2020 and 2032, respectively.
