ROK, Japan and China to Discuss ODA in Northeast Asia and Regional Cooperation

1. The 7th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity will be held on Jeju Island on May 31-June 2. Delegates from the ROK, Japan and China will discuss ways to cooperate on ODA as part of intra-regional cooperation in Northeast Asia.

o The forum will be attended by some 2,680 people from 32 countries, including Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov, Secretary General of the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Lamberto Zannier, Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan, and other former and incumbent high-level officials home and abroad.

2. At the “Foreign Policy and ODA Session: Global Public Goods and ODA in Northeast Asia” to be held on June 1, Director-General for Development Cooperation of the Foreign Ministry Park Enna will give a presentation titled “Korea’s ODA Policy and Global Governance”. She will address the importance of ODA as a major part of the ROK’s foreign policy.

o Director-General Park will explain that ODA is a central factor in increasing the ROK’s contributions to the international community. She will also highlight the Foreign Ministry’s efforts to implement the ODA policy in a more strategical and systematical way.

3. On June 2, presenters from the ROK, Japan and China, as well as discussants from home and abroad, will have a plenary discussion on ODA in Northeast Asia for global public goods, and regional cooperation. It will provide the three Northeast Asian countries with an opportunity to discuss ways to cooperate on ODA for the first time.
