1. Ambassador Shin Kak-soo of the Republic of Korea to Japan and Japan’s Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba will sign the “ROK-Japan General Security of Information Agreement” at Japan’s Foreign Ministry on July 30, if the Agreement is passed at the cabinet meeting scheduled for earlier in the day.

2. The Agreement lays a legal groundwork for protecting classified military information exchanged between the ROK and Japan by calling for the two countries to take necessary measures pursuant to their respective statute.

* The Agreement does not oblige the two countries to provide each other with classified military information. Rather, it stipulates ways to safely exchange, protect and manage information, in case any such information is provided by one to the other.

3. The ROK has concluded similar agreements with the governments or defense authorities of 23 countries, including the US, Russia and Poland, as well as NATO.
