1. The Foreign Ministry, together with the Education Ministry, will host a FEALAC Seminar on Industry-University Collaboration in Seoul on October 10.

* FEALAC is the acronym for the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation.

° FEALAC member states carry out their national projects, and the upcoming Seminar will take place as one of the ROK government’s national projects.

2. At the Seminar, in response to the keen interest of the FEALAC member countries in science and technology, 15 delegates, including government officials and academics from 12 FEALAC member countries, will introduce their countries’ policies for industry-academia cooperation as well as outstanding cases. They will also explore ways to promote cooperation among the member states.

3. FEALAC is the only multilateral inter-governmental consultative body between East Asia and Latin America launched in 1999 and composed of 36 member states – 16 East Asian and 20 Latin American. The ROK has been actively contributing to the development of FEALAC by: serving as a Regional Coordinator of East Asia in 2004-2007 and a co-chair of one of its Working Groups in 2007-2013; proposing the establishment of the Vision Group, which carried out activities in 2012-2013; and hosting and operating the Cyber Secretariat.

4. The forthcoming Seminar is expected to serve as a good opportunity to enhance mutual understanding between East Asia and Latin America and explore the possibility of bilateral cooperation in science, technology and industry-academia cooperation.
