1. Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano will visit the Republic of Korea from October 13 through 16. During the visit, he will meet with key government officials of the ROK, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Yun Byung-se, Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning Choi Mun-kee and Chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Lee Un-chul. He will also attend the 2013 World Energy Congress to take place in the city of Daegu.

2. The ROK and the IAEA will consult on key pending issues, including the North Korean nuclear issue; nuclear security and the safety of atomic energy; and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The Director-General’s visit to the ROK is expected to help further strengthen substantive cooperation between the ROK and the IAEA.

3. Since its accession to the IAEA in 1957, the ROK has worked closely with the IAEA, as demonstrated by its holding Policy Consultations with the body as well as meetings of the IAEA Verification Experts Group; taking part in the IAEA Peaceful Uses Initiative; and concluding a bilateral agreement in June 2012 calling for closer cooperation on integrated safety measures.
