Forum on Northeast Asia Energy Cooperation to Take Place as a Side Event of the World Energy Congress Daegu 2013

1.The Foreign Ministry, together with the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Organizing Committee of the World Energy Congress Daegu 2013, will host a forum titled “Northeast Asia: Prospects of Energy Cooperation” in the city of Daegu on October 15.

2. At the forum, Second Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul and Director of the UNESCAP East and Northeast Asia Office Kilaparti Ramakrishna will deliver opening remarks. The forum will also feature presentations by six key figures in the energy field from Northeast Asian countries -- the Republic of Korea, China, Japan and Russia.

3. The forum is expected to serve as an opportunity for in-depth discussions on issues concerning comprehensive energy cooperation in Northeast Asia and ways for regional cooperation to enhance its energy security. The topics to be discussed include developing infrastructure to promote energy connectivity; setting up a gas trading hub; and an initiative for establishing a cooperative mechanism for nuclear safety.
