ROK’s IFANS-Russia’s MGIMO Meeting and ROK-China-Russia Meeting to Take Place to Discuss Situation in Northeast Asia and Ways to Enhance Cooperation

1. The ROK’s IFANS-Russia’s MGIMO Meeting and the Fifth ROK-China-Russia Meeting, hosted by the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA, Chancellor: Yun Duk-min), Russia’s Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO, Rector: Torkunov) and the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS, President: Qu Xing), will be held at the KNDA on October 16 and 17, respectively.

Participants from the ROK side will include KNDA Chancellor Yun Duk-min, IFANS President Hong Ji-in, Professors Ko Jae-nam, Jun Bong-geun, Kim Dok-ju and Choi Woo-seon from IFANS, Professor Eom Gu-ho from Hanyang University and Senior Research Fellow Hong Hyun-ik from the Sejong Institute. Participants from the Chinese side will include CIIS President Qu Xing, Director Zhao Qinghai of the Editorial Department and Deputy Director Li Ziguo of the Department for European-Central Asian Studies. Participants from the Russian side will include Head of the MGIMO Asian and African Studies Department Dmitry Streltsov, former Russian Ambassador to the ROK Alexander Panov and former Russian Ambassador to the DPRK Valery Sukhinin.

3. The ROK’s IFANS-Russia’s MGIMO Meeting will discuss the current state and prospects of the situations in Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula, as well as the ROK-Russia Summit and ways to make substantive progress in the ROK-Russia strategic cooperative partnership. In the Fifth ROK-China-Russia Meeting, experts from the three countries will engage in extensive and in-depth discussions on the current state and prospects of politics and economy in East Asia and trilateral cooperation between the ROK, China and Russia in security, economy and culture.

4. The upcoming meetings will be an opportunity to exchange views on future summit meetings between the ROK and Russia and ways to make substantive progress in the ROK-Russia strategic cooperative partnership. The meetings will also provide an opportunity for the ROK, Chinese and Russian experts to discuss the ROK government’s Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Initiative and ways to strengthen cooperation between the three countries amid changing situations in Northeast Asia and the world. They will also exchange a wide range of opinions on ways to maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula.
