1. The Center for International Law of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) under the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA), together with the Center for North Korean Human Rights Studies under the Korea Institute for National Unification, will hold an academic conference themed “international law and policy on North Korea’s human rights issues” at the KNDA on June 17.

2. The event will bring together experts in international law and politics as well as relevant officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Unification and the Ministry of Justice, including Director of the Center for International Law Shin Kak-soo and Chair of the Center for North Korean Human Rights Studies Lee Geum-soon. The participants will engage in expert discussions on North Korea’s human rights issues, the UN and relevant international law at session I; and ways to resolve the issues at session II.

3. The meeting, as it comes amid increasingly active discussions by the international community on North Korea’s human rights situation, is expected to serve as an opportunity to deeply analyze the current human rights situation in North Korea and discuss the issue in terms of relevant international law. As such, it is expected to present a direction for the Republic of Korea and the international community to take to improve the North Korean situation down the road.
