Foreign Minister Holds a Telephone Conversation with his New Indian Counterpart

1. Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se held a telephone conversation with his new Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj on June 24. He took the opportunity to extend congratulations to Madame Swaraj on her inauguration as Foreign Minister and voiced hope to continue and increase the momentum of cooperation between the Republic of Korea and India built during President Park Geun-hye’s visit to India in January.

° Minister Yun, citing the importance of high-level exchanges between the two countries, voiced his hope to meet in person with Minister Swaraj at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to take place in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, in early August and invited her to the eighth meeting of the ROK-India Foreign Ministerial Joint Committee to be held in Seoul in the second half of this year.

° Minister Swaraj extended appreciation to Minister Yun for his congratulations on her inauguration and expressed expectations over the ARF Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the eighth meeting of the ROK-India Ministerial Joint Committee.

2. In addition, the two Ministers agreed to continue boosting the momentum of bilateral cooperation by smoothly following up on measures agreed upon during President Park’s visit to India. They also agreed to discuss in detail economic and other specific issues at the ARF Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in August.

3. Minister Yun conveyed hope for an early resolution of the abduction case involving Indian workers in Iraq amid the recent unrest in the country. Minister Swaraj expressed gratitude for the ROK’s concern over the case.
