1. On June 27, Dr. Hong Seong-phil, professor of law at Yonsei University, was appointed as a member of the UN Human Rights Council's Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

2. The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention probes cases of detention imposed inconsistently with international human rights norms; and makes judgments on the alleged cases of arbitrary detention and presents recommendations when necessary. One member from each of the UN's five regional groups is appointed to serve in the Group for a three-year term, which is renewable once.

3. Professor Hong, together with Professor Lee Yang-hee who has been appointed as Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, is expected to proactively contribute to the UN efforts to protect and promote human rights across the world.
