1. The government of the Republic of Korea decided to contribute 5 million US dollars in additional aid to counter the Ebola outbreak, in addition to the dispatch of the Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT). In a bid to increase the effectiveness of the dispatched KDRT and the ROK’s support to Sierra Leone, the ROK government decided to provide 3 million US dollars to help with the operation of Ebola treatment facilities where the KDRT is working, and 2 million to Sierra Leone through the World Health Organization (WHO).

o Considering that the KDRT will work at the UK-built Ebola treatment facilities and be provided with education, training, food, housing, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE), the ROK government decided to shoulder the expenses for operating the facilities in order to actively participate in the international aid efforts.

o The ROK government also decided to give aid to Sierra Leone through the WHO, an international organization in charge of the fight against Ebola. In particular, the government decided to provide PPE and training for healthcare workers to strengthen the Sierra Leone government’s capacity to counter the Ebola outbreak.

2. The ROK has contributed a total of 12.6 million US dollars, including the aforementioned 5 million, to support the fight against Ebola. The ROK’s assistance in a range of areas, including financial commitment, dispatch of personnel, provision of equipment, is expected to enable more effective responses to the Ebola epidemic.

3. In the year 2014, the ROK government has taken an active part in humanitarian disaster relief efforts, including in Ebola-affected countries, Syria, Iraq, the Gaza Strip and Ukraine, providing a total of 44.7 billion KRW in humanitarian aid in 42 cases.

o By continuing to increase its budget for humanitarian assistance, the ROK government will more proactively carry out its diplomacy related to humanitarian aid, which lays the foundation for global peace and security.
