1. In addition to the in-kind and monetary donations and emergency relief workers sent by the government of the Republic of Korea immediately after the latest earthquake in Nepal, the ROK government has decided to provide grant aid worth 10 million US dollars to assist with Nepal’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.

o In his address to Nepal’s parliament on May 8, the Prime Minister of Nepal highlighted the urgent need to rebuild public facilities. On May 15, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution urging the international community to support the Nepalese government’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.

2. The ROK government will first support Nepal’s recovery and reconstruction activities, where the Nepalese government confirmed that there is an urgent need for assistance. To address the mid- to long-term needs, the ROK government will develop appropriate projects that meet the needs on the ground and provide support in phases.

o The ROK will immediately give assistance most needed in the initial recovery phase, including heavy equipment to remove debris, and medial relief services for the victims of the earthquake.

o The ROK, in close consultation with its Embassy and KOICA Office in Nepal, will develop and conduct projects this year, mainly those to establish the healthcare system and build capacity in affected regions, as well as to strengthen the Nepalese government’s ability to respond to earthquakes.

o The ROK is also reviewing measures to conduct recovery and reconstruction projects jointly with international aid organizations, including the UNDP, UNICEF, the WFP and the WHO.

3. The ROK government expects that its support will make substantive contributions to the recovery and reconstruction activities of the Nepalese people, who are suffering after the recent earthquake. The government will continue to explore ways to join the international community’s efforts to support Nepal’s reconstruction.
