Foreign Minister to Visit the US

1. Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se will visit the US from June 14 through 16 to meet with his Malaysian counterpart and to sign the Republic of Korea-United States Nuclear Cooperation Agreement with the US Secretary of Energy.

2. In New York on June 14, Minister Yun will meet with his Malaysian counterpart Anifah Aman for an in-depth discussion on pending bilateral issues across the board, including political affairs, economy, trade and defense industry; the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC); the situations on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia; ways to work together at ASEAN and the UN and on other international stages.

* Malaysia is serving as the chair country of ASEAN for the year 2015, a non-permanent member as well as president for June of the UN Security Council, and a member of the UNESCO WHC.

3. Minister Yun will then visit Washington DC on June 15 to formally sign with US Secretary of Energy Earnest Moniz the revised ROK-US Nuclear Cooperation Agreement.

◦ The ROK and the US, upon the completion of negotiations to revise their Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, initialed the revised version on April 22 and have since undergone their respective domestic procedures necessary for its formal signing.

◦ During his visit to Washington, Minister Yun will also meet with National Security Adviser to the President Susan Rice and other high-level officials of the US administration.

4. Minister Yun’s visit to the US, during which the ROK-US Nuclear Cooperation Agreement will be signed, will serve as an opportunity to set a new milestone for the bilateral alliance and thereby to reaffirm the steadfast and close bilateral relations. In addition, on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the ROK’s diplomatic relations with Malaysia, the ASEAN chair, the bilateral Foreign Ministers’ meeting is expected to contribute to the ROK’s efforts to step up cooperation with the country on both bilateral and multilateral issues, such as those concerning UNESCO world heritage inscription.
