1. The government of the Republic of Korea, which is actively pursuing humanitarian diplomacy as part of its middle power diplomacy, has decided to provide humanitarian aid worth 10 billion Korean won (9 million US dollars) to support forcibly displaced people in five conflict areas.

o Iraq (US$ 5 million), Ukraine (US$ 1 million), South Sudan (US$ 2 million), Sudan (US$ 500,000), Gaza Strip in Palestine (US$ 500,000)

2. This aid is additional one to the regions, to which the ROK government has provided humanitarian assistance for several years with continued interest among areas which received the most serious humanitarian crisis designation from the UN. The aid from the ROK government will be mainly used to support forcibly displaced people, who are going through the greatest suffering due to conflicts.

3. This ROK government’s humanitarian aid worth 10 billion won will be delivered mostly through international organizations actively carrying out humanitarian activities in the regions, including the World Food Programme, the UN Refugee Agency, and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The aid will be focused on settlement support in refugee camps, as well as education and health projects for youth and children.

4. The ROK government has continuously increased its official development assistance to support the international community’s efforts towards poverty eradication and sustainable development. The government has also actively participated in international joint efforts to respond to humanitarian crises caused by natural disasters, conflicts, Ebola and other infectious diseases. The ROK will continue to explore various ways to scale up humanitarian assistance as part of its active pursuit of humanitarian diplomacy.
