(Head of the ROK delegation: Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs Shin Dong-ik)

o The upcoming conference aims to gather international support to completely eradicate Ebola and assist Ebola-affected countries in their recovery efforts over the next two years. The conference will be attended by the heads of state of three Ebola-affected countries (Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone) and co-hosted by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the European Union and the African Union.

2. At the conference, Deputy Minister Shin will emphasize that the ROK has actively participated in the international community’s joint efforts to counter Ebola from the initial phase of the Ebola outbreak. In particular, he will highlight the ROK government’s expanding role in responding to global humanitarian crises, including the government’s deployment of the Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT) to fight the infectious disease disaster for the first time ever in the history of humanitarian diplomacy.

o By announcing the ROK government’s decision to donate 5 million US dollars in additional aid, Deputy Minister Shin will express the government’s willingness to continue to contribute to the complete eradication of Ebola and Ebola-hit countries’ swift recovery.

3. The ROK government’s US$ 5 million pledge to support the recovery of Ebola-affected countries is expected to make significant contributions to improving the continuity and effectiveness of the ROK’s ODA, as it will help link humanitarian aid with development cooperation.

o Considering the growing humanitarian crises in the international community, the ROK government will continue to work not only to increase the quantity of humanitarian aid, but also to improve its quality by linking emergency relief and humanitarian aid with development cooperation.
