Foreign Minister Meets with a Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

1. Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se met with former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on October 20. In the meeting, the Minister commended the former UN High Commissioner for her great achievements during her tenure as High Commissioner, including responding swiftly to various violations of human rights committed across the world and serving as a voice of conscience to protect and promote human rights of vulnerable grouops, especially women.

* Former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay is on a visit to the Republic of Korea from October 18 through 24 at the invitation of Minister Yun and to attend the World Knowledge Forum 2015.

* The UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) was established in March 2013 after then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Pillay urged in January 2013 that an international investigation be conducted into the human rights violations committed by the North Korean regime.

* With regard to the issue of sexual slavery victims drafted by Japan’s Imperial Army during World War II, in August 2014, then High Commissioner Pillay stressed that “This is not an issue relegated to history. It is a current issue, as human rights violations against these women continue to occur as long as their rights to justice and reparation are not realized.”


2. During her visit to the ROK, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Pillay will attend the World Knowledge Forum 2015, which will be hosted by Maeil Business News Korea on October 22. On October 23, she will deliver a lecture at Seoul National University.
