United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association to Visit the Republic of Korea

1. UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association Maina Kiai will make an official visit to the Republic of Korea from January 20 to 29.

2. During his visit to the ROK, Special Rapporteur Kiai will meet with representatives from government agencies, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, and civil society organizations, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of the Interior, the Supreme Court of Korea, the Constitutional Court of Korea, the Korean National Police Agency, and the National Election Commission. He will conclude his visit to the ROK with a press conference on January 29.

o A report on the outcome of his visit to the ROK and his recommendations will be submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2016.

3. The Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association was created by a Human Rights Council resolution in September 2010 as one of the Special Procedures of the UN Human Rights Council. Special Rapporteur Kiai was appointed as the first Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association in May 2011.

o The Special Rapporteur gathers information on the protection and promotion of freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, and recommends that countries improve relevant systems.
