1. Second Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul and Minister of Road and Transportation of Mongolia M.Zorigt held the second meeting of the Republic of Korea-Mongolia Joint Committee at the Foreign Ministry on March 24. The two sides reviewed the current state of the cooperative relations between the two countries in various sectors, and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in a range of areas, including economy and development cooperation.

2. The two sides took note that the ROK-Mongolia “comprehensive partnership” is deepening through robust high-level exchanges in recent years, including the ROK Prime Minister’s visit to Mongolia in December 2015, which marked the first in 14 years. They also noted that material and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries have expanded significantly, with the bilateral trade volume increasing by 110 times since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1990, and the number of visitors per year to each other’s countries exceeding 120,000 people.

3. Meanwhile, Vice Minister Cho requested that Mongolia actively participate in the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution, adopted in response to the latest North Korean nuclear and missile provocations, as well as the international community’s efforts to put pressure on North Korea.

4. The latest Joint Committee holds significance in that it served as an opportunity to help Korean companies increase their presence in the energy and resources sector, and the transportation and logistics sector, in Mongolia, a resource-rich country. It also provided an opportunity to affirm Mongolia’s willingness to participate in sanctions against North Korea.
