ROK Undertakes 5 Tasks to Spread Saemaul Undong in the International Community

1. The government of the Republic of Korea held the 25th meeting of the Committee for International Development Cooperation (CIDC), which is headed by the Prime Minister, and discussed and finalized ways to spread Saemaul Undong (new community movement) in the international community.

2. Ahead of the meeting, the ROK government, together with civilian experts, undertook the five following tasks after reviews of the current state and case studies.

3. First, they have set a clear concept for Saemaul Undong official development assistance (ODA), which had remained unclear, has been made clear.

4. Second, the government has set strategies befitting situations of recipient countries.

5. Third, the government has improved the project procedure, with ways set to conduct the projects of different types in a more efficient manner.

6. Fourth, the government has improved the implementation system, with the work efficiently to be divided among different agencies.

7. Lastly, the government will enhance the connectivity between grants and loans and draw more participation fromf companies and NGOs in the projects.

8. Saemaul Undong, which contributed greatly to the ROK’s economic development in the 1970s, has spread to developing countries since the 2000s, drawing acclaim from the international community.
