1. The Republic of Korea was elected at the UN headquarters on June 14 to serve on the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2017-2019 term. This marks the fourth consecutive time for the ROK to be elected to the Council.

2. ECOSOC, one of the principal organs of the UN along with the General Assembly and the Security Council, consists of 54, three-year-term member countries. It is playing a leading role at the UN in discussions on ways to implement the sustainable development goals, which were adopted in September 2015.

3. The ROK, through its activities at ECOSOC and the service of its Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN as ECOSOC President, is currently leading main discussions at the body. Re-elected to the Council, the ROK will make continued efforts to contribute to the discussions on economy, social affairs and development at the UN and on other international stages over the next three years.
