1. Dr. Ju Se-jong of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology was elected on July 22 by the Council of the International Seabed Authority as a member of the ISA’s Legal and Technical Commission.

2. The ISA’s Legal and Technical Commission, composed of 30 legal, technical, scientific and environmental experts related to the development of underwater resources, carries out such missions as drafting international regulations on legal, environmental and technical matters regarding the exploration and development of deep-sea resources.

3. The tenure of the members of the Legal and Technical Commission lasts five years. Dr. Ju, who will start to serve on the Commission in 2017, is expected to contribute greatly to the Republic of Korea’s efforts to explore and develop deep-sea resources.

° Currently, the ROK has the right to explore three types of marine minerals, -- manganese nodules, marine hydrothermal deposits and manganese pavements -- which are controlled by the ISA.
