1. The first group of officials and civilians will head to Brazil on August 2 to work in the temporary consular office in Rio, which will be in operation during the 2016 Summer Olympics to protect ROK nationals on the ground.

2. The office will be in operation from August 4 to 22. Its 15-member personnel will include officials from the Foreign Ministry and other relevant government agencies, such as the National Medical Center, the National Counterterrorism Center of the Prime Minister’s Office, and the National Police Agency, as well as volunteers. The office will offer the following services to the ROK people in Rio around the time of the Summer Olympics.

° Handle the aftermath of incidents and accidents involving Koreans by: rushing a response team to the incident/accident site, assisting with reporting the damage or injuries to the police, including by providing interpretation services; and issuing travel certificates to those who get their passports stolen.

° With regard to infectious diseases and terrorism: carry out promotional activities to prevent the contraction of infectious diseases and take care of the infected; and in the event of terrorist incidents or disasters, protect and relocate Koreans to a safer place, and work with Brazilian government agencies and consulates-generals of the ROK’s allies.

3. In a bid to ensure the safety of the Korean visitors to Brazil, the Foreign Ministry has opened a skype community for “safe travel during the Rio Olympics” and is sending out SMSs to the Korean visitors, urging them to pay heed to their safety and to take precautions against infectious diseases.
