1. The Republic of Korea, the chair of the Multilateral Organization Performance Assessment Network (MOPAN) for the year 2016, will preside over the second 2016 meeting of the MOPAN Steering Committee in Paris, France, on October 13 and 14.

° MOPAN is a network of 17 donor countries established 2002 to assess the organizational and development effectiveness of multilateral bodies on development cooperation and humanitarian assistance. The ROK, having become its first Asian member in December 2008, started to serve as its first Asian chair in January 2016.

2. At its forthcoming meeting, the MOPAN Steering Committee will discuss the plan to publish assessment reports for the years 2015 and 2016 on 12 multilateral organizations, including UNICEF and the World Bank; select 14 multilateral bodies to be assessed by MOPAN over the next two years; and set MOPAN’s mid- to long-term strategies and way forward in line with the developments in global development cooperation, including the launch of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

3. The year 2016, which marks the launch of sustainable development goals (SDGs), is a challenging year for MOPAN, as a new assessment methodology has been introduced and the number of organizations to be assessed has increased to 12 from three to four of the past. However, the ROK is seen to have served successfully as the chair of MOPAN, leading discussions among developed donor countries on ways to better evaluate multilateral organizations and to improve their effectiveness, and helping enhance the ROK’s international standing as an exemplary donor country.
