1. In the election of the UN International Law Commission (ILC) held at the UN headquarters in New York on November 3, local time, professor Park Ki-gab of Korea University, a current ILC member, was re-elected to serve in the body from 2017 till 2021.

2. The ILC, established pursuant to a UN General Assembly resolution in 1947 to seek steady advances in and the codification of international law, has since carried out important missions in the field, including drafting texts of major international agreements.

3. With professor Park re-elected to the ILC, the ROK is expected to play a bigger role in the advancement of international law and to enhance its standing in the field.
