Government and Travel Agencies Meet to Seek Ways to Ensure Safe Overseas Travel

1. With the winter vacation season approaching, the Foreign Ministry held on November 4 a meeting on safe overseas travel with the National Counterterrorism Center at the Office for Government Policy Coordination, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and travel agencies.

2. In his opening remarks, Ambassador for Overseas Koreans and Consular Affairs Han Dong-man, who presided over the meeting, brought attention to the fact with the continued growth in the number of overseas travelers from the Republic of Korea, an increasing number of ROK nationals are falling victim to incidents or accidents abroad ; cited some of recent such cases; explained the current terrorism situation; and asked travel agencies to frequently check information on safe overseas travel and relay it to their customers.

3. The Foreign Ministry posts relevant information on individual countries on its safe overseas travel website at www.0404.go.kr and runs a 24/7 Consular Call Center to handle emergency cases.

4. Furthermore, the Foreign Ministry sends text messages to those traveling in risky regions, has a message on safe travel inserted in e-tickets, and carries out various promotional campaigns on safe overseas travel, including through its college-student supporters. Going forward, the Ministry will continue to provide adequate information in an effort to better ensure the safety of Korean travelers abroad.
