Foreign Minister Meets with GCF Executive Director Howard Bamsey

1. Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se met with Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Howard Bamsey on May 1, and conveyed the ROK government’s willingness to continue to support the GCF.

2. Minister Yun stressed that the ROK government is placing a high priority on responding to climate change, and welcomed the inauguration of Howard Bamsey, who served as the Director-General of the GGGI, as the Executive Director of the GCF, which will play a leading role in developing countries’ efforts to respond to climate change.

o Executive Director Bamsey expressed appreciation for the ROK government’s interest in climate change, and explained that the GCF and the GGGI are making efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two organizations, including signing a cooperation agreement.

3. Minister Yun and Executive Director Bamsey took note that cooperation between the ROK and the GCF is expanding, with the Korea Development Bank becoming an accredited implementing institution of the GCF recently, and the Solomon Islands hydropower projects where Korean companies are participating being approved as one of the projects supported by the GCF.

o Minister Yun said that the ROK government is assisting developing countries in responding to climate change with the support of the GCF by developing project models for climate change response for developing countries.

4. Minister Yun took note of the efforts of the GCF and Executive Director Bamsey to strengthen networks with the diplomatic corps in the ROK, and asked the GCF to continue to participate in the Green Roundtable hosted by the Foreign Ministry.

o Executive Director Bamsey expressed appreciation for the Foreign Ministry’s support in successfully holding a GCF briefing for the diplomatic corps in the ROK this morning.

5. Minister Yun said that the ROK government will continue to actively support the GCF’s stable settlement in Songdo. Executive Director Bamsey expressed appreciation for the ROK government’s support and hoped to see continued cooperation between the two sides.
