ROK, Japan and China to Hold 2nd Trilateral Dialogue on Arctic Cooperation

1. The second high-level dialogue on Arctic cooperation among the Republic of Korea, Japan and China will take place in Tokyo on June 8, with Ambassador for Arctic Affairs Kim Young-jun, Ambassador in charge of Arctic Affairs Kazuko Shiraishi and Special Representative for Arctic Affairs Gao Feng of the Foreign Ministries of the three countries leading their respective delegations.

° The ROK delegation to the meeting will be composed of officials of such relevant government agencies as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, as well as those from the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), the National Institute of Ecology (NIE) and other related think tanks. The Japanese side will consist of officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), while China will be represented by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Oceanic Administration.

2. The inaugural round of the ROK-Japan-China dialogue on Arctic cooperation took place in Seoul in April 2016 after the ROK had proposed holding it at the sixth trilateral summit meeting in November 2015.

3. At the forthcoming round, the delegates from the government agencies and think tanks of the ROK, Japan and China will exchange views on a wide range of relevant matters, including their respective Arctic policies and activities as well as their plans thereof; possible, new trilateral cooperation projects in Arctic science; ways to advance the dialogue on Arctic cooperation; and potential areas for Arctic cooperation.
