Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Officially Elected as Chair of International Olympic Committee (IOC) Ethics Commission

1. Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was officially elected as Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Ethics Commission on September 14 at the 131st IOC session in Lima, Peru.

o The IOC Ethics Commission, an independent body within the IOC, defines and updates ethical principles in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Olympic Charter; investigates issues regarding possible violations of ethics rules; and if necessary, proposes measures or sanctions to the IOC Executive Board.

2. Former Secretary-General Ban said that “I am truly humbled to serve the IOC through this role. Together let us do even more to harness the immeasurable potential of sport to foster a better world; a world which we all dream of where human rights are fully respected and protected.”

3. Chair of the IOC Ethics Commission Ban is expected to successfully perform his duties of enhancing the IOC’s accountability and transparency, as during his term as UN Secretary-General, he had maintained close relationship with the IOC, and has abundant global experience.
